RTS/CTS ON 2. 31250 BAUD 3. 64K BUFFER! Jrcomm should be set to 38.4k w/ transfer buffer 16k and 4 colors. It seems the more the colors the more you are likely to loose characters due to the 38.4k locked baud rate. INIT STRING should be ATZ. One note 16.8k hst doesnt seem to be detecting busy signals as fast as the 14.4k it takes 4 busys instead of the normal two. Hopefully this can be changed! Ami Express should be set to 38400 in the config. OF COURSE set to 2 color mode! INIT STRING should be ATE0M0S0=0. 16800 only works on 1.1x so far! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- EUROPEAN POWER_SUPPLY: 5p DIN Connector [Solder Side] 3 - o o - 1 1. And NO Setter program (that i think is BAD cauze I want to KNOW what is changed and what isnt!) if you dont know how to change your modem settings then sell your HST.. If you have a turbocard then you can just use the settings supplied you dont need to do any tricks! but if you have problems with your modem this text CAN help you out.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USING 38400 BPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ but FIRST of all HOW to install the SOFTWARE right for this speed. (For an Amiga without any turbocard like a 020 or 030 or even 040) If you are running Kickstart 1.3 (1.2) you MUST Copy the Serial.device supplied to your DEVS: dir (EVEN if your serial.dev is a newer version they still doesnt work with 38400!) (Remember that you MUST copy the supplied serial.device or it wont work!) (you can TRY to change after you have tested the supplied serial.device maybe it works) The serial.device supplied with WB2.0 is fast enough for 38400 so you dont have to copy the supplied serial.device.. Then load preferences (Kick 2.0 should load prefs for serial!) Go to the serial menu and set the BAUD rate on 19200 (!) and the buffer to the HIGHEST AVAIBLE (16Kb on 1.3 and 64Kb on 2.0) and the ABSOLUTLEY most important thing turn ON RTS/CTS handshake! do NOT use Xon/Xoff it is slower then RTS/CTS and not as safe and sometimes can make your serial-port to STUCK.. Now you should save that on disk/hd now load your terminal program. Use a config supplied OR set the program as follows!! RTS/CTS Handshake *MUST* be ON! If theres a Serial buffer there set it to MAX! Set to 2 Colors. AND Change the Task priority to something between 10-32 (Higher Pri=Safer 38400 but slower multitasking!) IF the program lacks possability of changing Task priority (Like AZComm and VLT) you must write ChangeTaskPri before running the terminal program. Set your Baudrate to 38400.... NOTE: Some terminal programs can be used with 8 colors depending on the rest of your equipment NOTE2: SOME Harddisk controllers does NOT accept a too high task priority in some BAD cases not even high enough for 38400... if the task priority is too low you will get many errors in UL/DL but if your controller doesnt support high taskpriority you will also get lots of errors NODE3: Using SOME Slow terminal programs (like JRComm) you MUST have REAL Fastmem to sucessfully use 38400.. that means NO intenal memory ok now its time for your modem settings, this is a dump of a non ASL HST ATI4: (but HST users without V42 Bis should use those settings BUT change the &K3 to &K0 and the &A3 to &A2 or &A1 depending on how much your HST supports on the &A command (have NOTHING to do with the speed)) USRobotics Courier 14400 HST Settings... ATBx: When its set to 0 it will give a longer carrier and DS modems will also check for V32(Bis) connect (V32 modems can ONLY be set to ATB0) having this to 0 will help overseas callers to get better connects When set to 1 it connects HST faster BUT the carrier is short so overseas callers will have BIG problems connecting at HST speed. (V32 is DISABLED) ATCx: This is a setting IF the transmitter should be on or off! as we sure will transmit something it should be on 1 ATEx: When E0 the modem will NOT echo the commands you write to the modem. BUT Packed files CAN go fast like once when I ULed 4 DMS files and one DOC file and got this result (to the BBS Material World in Norway) File transfer Completed. 5 file(s), 2970k bytes, 19 minute(s) 47 second(s), 2404 cps, 249 % efficiency and THAT is REAL FAST, noone have still beaten me in UL speed on that BBS! Only ONE have beaten me on DL CPS (I got 1760 CPS or so can't remeber!) NOTE.. i broke that record LOOONG time ago still noone have broken it.. and im now on several Top CPS lists on BBSes worldwide.. I cant call outside Sweden anymore and i have HEARD that someone have beaten me on CPS rates on that board but i dont know WHAT type of file/s) Or how about this one that i got for one DMS file to Street Fight: File transfer Completed. 1 file(s), 798k bytes, 5 minute(s) 58 second(s), 2278 cps, 158 % efficiency. or: File transfer Completed. 2 file(s), 1241k bytes, 10 minute(s) 2 second(s), 2108 cps, 146 % efficiency. All with DMS files so this will improve CPS speeds This is the CPS rates that was the record before i changed to my 16800 modem: User Name Rate Date Set User Name Rate Date Set ====================== ==== ========= ====================== ==== ========= SNUSKBUSKE / DUAL CREW 3341 27-Apr-92 Tigershark/The Gang 3293 05-Feb-92 B.Ylle 2984 26-Feb-92 Stanton 3254 30-Apr-92 Tigershark/The Gang 2796 01-Feb-92 assassin 3047 15-Mar-92 Cevin Key 2742 05-Apr-92 Skalman 3035 24-Feb-92 SNUSKBUSKE / DUAL CREW 2708 27-Apr-92 wiz/notstar 3014 26-Apr-92 Skalman 2676 05-Feb-92 The Moose 2940 15-Jan-92 Skalman 2645 24-Feb-92 Eagleman 2844 10-Apr-92 Mars 2575 08-Mar-92 assassin 2836 20-Mar-92 zwinx 2559 11-Apr-92 Large 2808 28-Apr-92 Eee-Zee 2555 27-Apr-92 assassin 2723 30-Mar-92 The 3341 file was actually a DMS file! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ok that's it if you have trouble setting your computer to 38400 please do this: 1. do EVERYTHING *** EXACTLY *** as told in this textfile (And i MEAN -> EXACTLY <- I AM tired on guys who havent done EVERYTHING as i told and then complaining that this doesnt work!!) 2. refer to your modem manual (You know the book you got with your modem!) 3. test with different task prioritys 4. check if your serial cable have the RTS/CTS signal... the pins 1-8 and 20 MUST be connected... (1 isnt THAT important) 5. Check the 'Error-list' last of this text file 6. contact me and i help you out (please have your settings in a capture file, and your modem manual close to you!) To contact me: On my BBS: GANGBANG +46 (0)554/12133 9600-16800 BPS ONLY, AMIGA ELITE ONLY to 'Chucky' on POWERHOUSE +1 (713) 998-9042 HST ONLY, ELITE ONLY or: 2:203/602.2@fidonet@john hertell or: John Hertell Häckgatan 3 665 00 Kil Sweden (No Swapping or so) I have tested the following programs with 38400 without problems: And have included config files for those programs (exept AmiExpress and AZComm!) AmiExpress 1.0j and higher NComm 1.92 (:NComm.Config) (BEST results for me!) JRComm 1.0 and higher (S:JRComm.DEF) (With REAL fastmem) (Newer versions like the 1.02 SEEMS to have trouble with DL in 38400) VLT 5.045 (:VTPrefs.dat) AZComm (Write "ChangeTaskPri 30" before running!) Term1.9 (Especially for KS 2.0) (Write "ChangeTaskPri 30" before running!) I told i got errors with VLT in sethst2.txt i just forgot the Task Pri. Sorry! VLT did give the BEST result in screen handling but not soo good CPS rates I have HEARD that TEMPEST runs fine with 38400 If you run a Paragon BBS i must say that Paragon CAN'T handle 38400 BPS I Have tested with the following Hardware: Commodore 590 Harddisk with ONE external SCSI (havent tested with more) GVP Series II Harddisk with up to 3 external drives (WITH Memory included As its a bug in the FaaastROM.. should be fixed in V4.5) ALF 2.0 MFM/RLL Harddisk (With SOME losses of chars while printning on screen) Amiga 500 (as my BBS is running on An 500) Amiga 1000 Amiga 2000 (Turbo Amigas WORKS with 38400 without problems so i dont have to take em up here!) US Robotics Courier HST WITHOUT V42Bis (not soo big improvments) US Robotics Courier HST WITH V42Bis US Robotics Courier HST With V42Bis and ASL US Robotics DualStandard With V42Bis and ASL US Robotics 16800 DualStandard With V42Bis and ASL Miracom Courier HST With V42Bis Miracom DualStandard HST/V32 with V42Bis IF you have REAL FASTMEM it WILL improve the result... and if you CAN run Kickstart 2.0 DO run it.. the serial handling is MUCH safer and better in KS2.0 PS. I read somewhere in a file desc of SETHST.LZH that its already known how to set the modem! well NOT in 38400 as it seems that nearly noone with an 7.14 MHZ Amiga uses 38400 and i get many calls/day from persons asking on HOW to set a HST.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USING ACCELERATOR CARDS (020, 030 and 040) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As your computer is fast enough then you dont have to do any tricks with HIGH taskpriority.. doing such things will just make your computer slow and booring to use... you can multitask perfectly runing 38400 and a taskpriority of 0.. if you got an accelerator card theres absolutley NO reason to run 19200 BPS also use the supplied program CPUBLIT. Add this in your startup sequence: CPUBLIT >NIL: it will improve your text handling (using the CPU instead of the slow blitter) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USING A 16800 DUALSTANDARD MODEM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When you have a 16800 DualStandard modem and calls a similiar modem you will Connect in 14400 V32Bis instead of 16800 BPS HST I still havent found any setting so it connects HST before V32 (V32Bis) so the only thing to call such BBSes is to simply turn OFF the V32 protocol while calling those BBSes you are doing this with: ATS27=4 To turn ON the V32 protocol again just write: ATS27=0 I will search for a setting that answers HST before V32 but it seems that it doesnt excist.. (Something for US Robotics to try to get fixed?) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USING 57600 BPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are a lucky guy as I am having the new 16800 modem and have a 68020-68040 processor in your computer you can skip all those tricks of getting 38400. you can run with 0 as task priority and use such a high speed as 57600 BPS this will improve your speed even MORE.. some 020 and slow 030s MAY have to use a higher taskpriority using this high BPS rate.. please remember that only the NEW US Robotics (the SMALL ones) modems can handle a speed of 57600 BPS 57600 is IMPOSSIBLE to use with a normal 68000 processor! ***MAYBE*** it will work with Kickstart 2.0 if you have REAL FASTMEM and maybe a 16Mhz 68000 but i havent tested it out. Also use CPUBlit if your computer is fast.. read information above how to use it... (With fast computer i means ATLEAST 25MHz 030 or ANY 040 card) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some words about other modemsetters: There are MANY modem setters in the world spreaded on BBSes often are those settings BAD and just speed up the DIALING speed actually nothing else.. There are also a thing that you should boot in NTSC and then with software flick over to PAL to get higher CPS rates.... ok your terminalprogram will show a HIGH rate of about 2000 CPS but the BBS will still show you a low rate... this is becauze if you change the screen blanking you will also fuck up the clock so one secound is LONGER then its actually is so the terminal program can send more chars in one "secound" so it shows a FALSE result... I still havent seen ANY modemsetter or similiar who have beaten this series.... unfortunally doesnt sooo many use it becauze they have done somthing wrong (like dint care about copying the serial.device, changing taskpri or have a bad serial cable) and instead use one of the bad modem setters and use 19200 some even turn OFF V42Bis datacompression... (MNP 5 should be turned OFF) i sure want more BBSes running with 38400 its LOT more fun to connect on a BBS where menus, tectfiles and some files just pops up on the screen or HD.. AND doesnt slow down for packed files! sometimes even get even BETTER Xfers so Sysops and users PLEASE use 38400... you will get STUNNED when you see the result... many of my users have been stunned now its maybe your time? (many persons have also called me up and THANKED me for this series and thats make me happy! YOUR WELCOME.. i dont have my settings secret cauze i want the HST to really SWEAT and get fast connect whereever i call) As some persons HAVE had some trouble i will set up a list of problems AND possibly whats wrong: WRONG: WHAT MAYBE IS WRONG: *LOTS* of errors in ULs the RTS/CTS signal is missing check your DLs is ok &H1 settings and check if your terminal program is set on RTS/CTS and in some cases check that RTS/CTS is turned ON in preferences if this is ok then maybe your serial-cable is wrong! pins 1-8 and 20 should be connected straight over. (Shematics on the bottom side of your modem) I know companys (NO NAMES) that sells HST modems with serial cables that ISNT designed for HSTs those cables lacks RTS/CTS (they say you should use Xon/Xoff (BAD) and dosnt have the Carrier Detect signal so some terminal programs or BBS programs thinks the line is dropped when its not dropped!) Errors in UL and DL Too low serial buffer or too low task priority (or to HIGH priority for your HD controller) or wrong (to slow) serial.device Or you have FAKE Fastmem and no REAL FASTMEM get some REAL Fastmem (some GVP controllers without Fastmem will have problems with fast serial transfers if you dont have memory installed) Loosing chars on the Too many colors?? try 2 of them! Screen but Uls and DLs works great The same as above BUT Some Harddrive controllers (Like the ALF) with 2 colors does a stupid check if the HD is there or removed (the same check as the click on a disk) and this disturbs the sending.. try changing the priority of the HD device IF POSSIBLE.. ULs works ok but errors It seems that JRComm of the newer versions have in DL using JRComm a SLOWER serial handling so it will not work with 38400 try to use NComm. Error while accessing It seems that your device (HD, Network, Drive etc) any device. Are too slow check to download/upload to RAD: or RAM: and check your settings.. PS... I read in another info file on how to set the HST that while the modem "blinks" as they call it (when the CS led is black) that the modem was sending in a lower speed then if the CS souldnt "blink" thats WRONG and is written by a person who dont know anything about modems... the CS is CLEAR TO SEND and is light when the modem is ready to recive data from the computer but as the computer sends in 38400 (OR 19200) and the modem sends the stuff to the line in 14400(16800) BPS the modems buffer is full. then CS is out so the computer KNOW that the buffer is full and the modem is working on sending the buffer on the line... If your CS led is "blinking" and you doesnt get errors its just a signal that your modem is correctly set and everything is working fine dont matter if the CS is flashing! ok the faster the CS is flashing the faster CPS speed SOMETIMES sometimes the opposite then it maybe sends in a LOWER speed then it actually is.. its like if your terminal program was running on 9600 and the modem on 14400 (not possible but but) so just dont care about that information file written by someone who maybe knows something about 2400 modems.. Still NOONE have made a setting series BETTER then SetHst.. now some BBSes is starting to use it and I notice the difference as Im getting HIGH CPS speeds even to USA (like 1650-1770 CPS from SWEDEN to USA) So Sysops DO RUN YOUR BBS ON THE SETHST SETTINGS FOR BEST RESULT.. (1920-5760 when running on 16800) DS.. Note.. In SetHst4 i thought that i have supplied the wrong config file for JR-Comm its now checked and all OK.. Ok now you maybe wonder WHAT different signals etc are made for and WHY they are important... so now i will TRY to explain it.... RD Recive Data this led is flashing ONLY when data is transmitted between Modem -> Computer NOT Modem <-> Modem SD Send Data This led is flashing ONLY when data is transmitted between Computer -> Modem NOT the line... more about this in RTS/CTS so while SD is out it can STILL send data to the line.. OH When the modem have the line... On Hook ... simple! CD Carrier Detect theres a connect ARQ When flashing the line is bad and the modem have to resend data! Slows down CPS and CANT be changed in any settings! MAYBE by using a lower BPS rate... RTS/CTS This is a VERY important handshake for the modem.. now i will explain WHAT it actually does/means When sending data to the modem in 38400 the modem is actually sending in 14400 (16800) to the line but the V42Bis DATACOMPRESSION will TRY to pack the data.. but often it cant pack so it gets up to 38400 BPS often it packs just to something between 14400 (16800) (NO compression) to 20000 Bps (2000CPS) that means that the modems buffer is quite soon filled then CTS is low (Clear To Send) so the computer knows that it have to wait to send more data so the modem can send its buffer to the line.. when the buffer is empty CTS is ok again so RTS (Request To Send) signals that the computer can send more data... IF this signal is missing the modems buffer will get filled BUT the computer doesnt know that and STILL sends data in 38400 but as the modems buffer is already filled those data will get LOST that will make so you get LOADS of errors and missing chars There ARE another handshaking too called Xon/Xoff it works nearly like RTS/CTS BUT its actually CHARS sent over so IF the modem send a special char it HALTS the serial port until another char get transmitted from the other modem.. this can make the serial.device to simply STUCK... so theres no reason to use Xon/Xoff and it also slows down CPS a little... Xon/Xoff is more used on OLD 2400 modems. ARQ Problems Many people thinks that ARQ problems can be solved trough changing settings but thats NOT true the ARQ is a part of the Errorcorrection (MNP 1-4 or V42) and when its out the modem have detected a error and resends the data until it have come over to the other modem 100% correct (BUT if it fails after 16 resendings it drops the line) OK it CAN be corrected by having a LOWER Bps rate.. like 12000 or 9600 Bps... but that effects the maximum CPS rate too... just cauze of the ARQ its IMPOSSIBLE to get errors or similiar effects with a HST modem or ANY other modem with errorcorrection connected to ANY other modem with Errorcorrection (MNP 1-4 and V42) IF you get errors you can be 100% sure something is wrong between SOME Computer <-> Modem.... IF you get errors on MY bbs you can be 99% sure the fault is at YOUR side (if im not multitasking HEAVY while you make your Xfer) Comment about some Modem Traders and SYSOPS: When i first released SetHst i thought that i would get SOME questions about HST but i REALLY got surprised that so MANY modemtraders and SYSOPS knew so LITTLE about modems... It seems that only abt 5% CAN READ A MANUAL.... there ARE even people claiming that my SetHst doesnt work when they have set something wrong like a low serialbuffer,, low taskpriority or even running kickstart 1.2 or 1.3 serial device when they MUST use the serial.device supplied in this archive (AS TOLD) if it doesnt work for you then use MY files supplied. I will make DMS files for all tested terminalprograms that IS set for the SetHst so the only thing you have to do is set your HST right... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some things about High Speed modems: Some persons don't know the difference between the different standards of highspeed modems so i will write some about them here: HST High Speed Technology a high speed protocol (C) by US Robotics that use 14400/450 450/14400 (on some older HSTS 9600/450 9600/300) It sends fastest on the channel who need it most. HST is NOT compaible to V32 Now theres even a new HST speed its 16800/450 450/16800 Bps V32 a CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 9600/9600 NOT COMPATIBLE with HST V32Bis A CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 14400/14400 NOT COMPATIBLE with the HST Standard DualStandard A modem sold by US Robotics (and noone else! the same as the HST) This modem got BOTH Highspeed standards so it DOES connect in HIGH speed to both V32s and HSTs V42 A errorcorrection! IF a HST is V42 compatible it's NOT V32 compatible EVEN if V42 is higher (as V32 is something COMPLETLY different!) V42Bis A packing method that is MUCH better then the MNP 5 compression (that ALL HST's have but should be disabled!) V42Bis compresses BETTER then MNP 5 and compresses ONLY if it is for any use! V42Bis is NOT compatible with V32/V32Bis of the same reason as V42 NOTE that MIRACOM HSTs is compatible with HST as its the same company If you have a V32 ONLY modem and call a HST the highest rate you will get is 2400 BPS with Datacompression (hopefully V42Bis!) the same if you call a V32 ONLY with a HST! Calling a DualStandard with a HST or V32 will connect in the highest possible rate! (16800-9600) in V32 OR HST If you are thinking of buying a high speed modem you should buy a HST OR DualStandard from US Robotics (as US Robotics are the ONLY copany having the HST standard ( (C) by them!) v32Bis is faster then HST but most of the BBSes have only HST. for a BBS DualStandard is the best thing to have. (well the DS is the best modem for called up lines in the world actually) There ARE other highspeed standards like the trailblaizer but those standards are BOTH EXPENSIVE and bad and not soo used so you will get a 2400 connect even if your modem have 9600! Theres actually only a standard up to 2400 BPS (600 Baud) Errorcorrection like MNP 1-4 and V42 and datacompression MNP 5 and V42Bis is a standard so they will be used if you call any brand modem with those standards BUT a HST will still get 2400 connection but WITH correction/compression... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SetHst 6 will contain a executable setter program ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================= Signed: Chucky of The Gang Sysop on GANGBANG +46 554/12133 9600-16800 DualStandard Amiga Elite ONLY!
